Sitting where the Caribbean and Atlantic Plates meet, the island is subject to tsunamis and earthquakes. The main economy of the country is tourism and local inhabitants of the island welcome about 5 million tourists each year. While the official languages of the country are Spanish and English, the diverse population includes many dialects of Spanish as well as the influences of the French and Europeans that have settled on the island over the past several hundred years.
