The third largest continent in the world, North American covers 16.5% of the worlds land mass. The continent sits on both the Pacific, North American, Caribbean, Juan de Fuca, and Cocos Plates, making it an active earthquake center. It is made up of four main regions consisting of the Southern Plains, the mountainous West, Northern Canadian Shield, and the Eastern region containing the most diverse ecosystem. Each of the regions lies within the area of a Teutonic plate.
