Indiana was defined as a US state on 11th of December 1816. It became the 19th state of the US. Its capital city is Indianapolis, which is also the biggest one in the state. Despite of being the least extensive state of the US, it is abundantly populated and boasts a high population density. The name of the state means Land of the Indians or Indian Land. This name is adopted from the history when the area was populated by Native Americans and the Red Indians. It is also called the Hoosier State and its residents Hoosiers, which is a slang term meaning a rough countryman. Regardless of the historical and cultural background, the state is home to some of the finest universities in US. The Indiana University and University of Notre Dame are included in top 50 US universities. The state also has a remarkable taste and prowess in several sports.
