South Dakota had been part of the French Colony from the 17th to the 18th century. It became a constituent part of the United States on November 2, 1889. Pierre is the capital city of the state. In fact, the official nickname of the state is "The Mount Rushmore State". South Dakota shares the border with North Dakota on the north. Minnesota and Iowa are located on its east as well as Nebraska on south. The states of Montana and Wyoming are situated on its western side. Cheyenne, Missouri, James and White are the major rivers of the state. The economy of the state is based on its manufacturing industry, livestock, crops and mining.
